Some take it directly, while many large chains only take it indirectly, through a payment processor or a gift card you buy with bitcoin first. Acceptance changes often and varies by country and location, so confirm with the merchant before relying on it. Businesses that have accepted bitcoin include:
- Online stores: CheapAir, Etsy (individual sellers), Namecheap, Newegg, NordVPN, Travala, Wix
- Physical stores: AMC, Burger King (some locations), PacSun. Several large chains, including Home Depot, Lowe's, GameStop, and Whole Foods Market, can be paid indirectly using a payment app or a bitcoin-purchased gift card rather than by sending bitcoin to the retailer.
There are also several companies that offer ways to pay for nearly anything using bitcoin. The following are three examples:
- BullBitcoin.com (Canada): a brokerage that allows you to send them payment instructions (e.g., PDFs of your bills), where they then generate a Bitcoin invoice based on that data, and when the money arrives on-chain or via Lightning, they pay the recipient. The recipient will not know that Bitcoin was used and gains no knowledge of your payment rails (bank accounts, credit card numbers, etc.).
- Shopinbit.com (EU): an online store that accepts bitcoin for a wide range of products and services, including a concierge service for custom trades.
- Bitrefill.com (worldwide): they offer gift cards for various shops and online services that can be purchased using bitcoin. These gift cards can then be used to exchange for goods and services.
