Note: In other wallets, the mnemonic backup is sometimes also known as a seed phrase, recovery phrase, or recovery seed.
A mnemonic backup looks something like this:
arrow garment kite truth yellow pelican roast latin discover jewel describe merry polar equip pistol next forest dignity kick word steel seminar actual genuine
Your mnemonic backup can be used to restore your wallet on any device running Blockstream Green. The mnemonic can be used to add access to the same wallet on multiple devices (e.g. desktop and mobile) or to restore your wallet on a new device (e.g. you lost or broke the original device).
Warning: If you do not have two-factor authentication enabled, anybody who knows your mnemonic backup can access your funds. It is important to store your mnemonic backup in a safe place; do not share it in public or with third parties.
How Does the Mnemonic Backup Work?
When you create a wallet on Blockstream Green, your app automatically generates a mnemonic backup which you must write down to complete the setup process.
The mnemonic represents one of your two Blockstream Green multisig keys in a human-readable format (the other key is held on the Blockstream Green servers). Representing the key as a series of words instead of a long string of letters and numbers minimizes the risk of errors when you write down your mnemonic.
In a 2-of-3 Blockstream Green account, a third backup key is also stored as a secondary mnemonic.
