BIP39 passphrases are an optional, advanced feature that provide some additional security to your wallet. They are not stored on Green, but instead are used to temporarily access a separate wallet by entering your passphrase during login. Learn more about the benefits of using a passphrase in our help center guide.
Keep in mind that using a passphrase also has some tradeoffs, so make sure you understand the implications of using one before you send any funds to a passphrase-protected wallet.
Warning: If you forget or lose your passphrase, you will permanently lose access to your funds even if you have your recovery phrase. You need both your recovery phrase and passphrase to log in to your wallet.
Login with a Passphrase
1.
Select your Bitcoin or Liquid wallet to enter the PIN entry screen. Tap the menu in the top right corner, then select BIP39 Passphrase Login.
Tip: Only Singlesig wallets can log in with an unlimited number passphrases at this time. Multisig Shield wallets can only log in to a passphrase protected wallet if the specific passphrase has already been used with a Blockstream Jade.
2.
Type your desired passphrase and review the additional information about passphrases. Do not proceed if you do not understand the implications of using one. You can then choose for Green to prompt you to enter a passphrase upon each login by enabling Always Ask. Keep in mind that enabling Always Ask means an attacker will assume you are using a hidden wallet, in which case you will lose plausible deniability. If you would like to hide the fact that your wallet uses a passphrase, leave this setting disabled.
Note: Different passphrases lead to different wallets, so don't lose yours! Upon each login, you will need to enter it exactly as you did when previously using your wallet. Keep in mind, there is no "incorrect" passphrase. Your wallet with a passphrase of "bitcoin" will lead to a different wallet than your wallet with a passphrase of "bitcoins". Oh, and spaces count too!
3.
The login screen will now display that you are logging into your wallet with an additional passphrase. Enter your PIN as usual and you will be logged into your passphrase-protected wallet. Don't forget, this is a different wallet than the one you would access if entering your PIN without a passphrase and it is only accessed temporarily. To generate this same wallet again, you will need to enter your passphrase upon every log in.
